You are correct that the dish itself does not make a difference in if you get an analog or a digital signal. The reason you need a new dish is that DirecTV had to put up additional satellites to get the channel space for the HD signals. The replacement dishes are larger with more LNBs (the things in the center of the dish) so that it can "see" more satellites at one time.
